About Tugo

Tugo is an online tutoring provider that uses real-time analytics to help teachers give targeted support exactly when a student needs it, and before a misunderstanding becomes a learned mistake. The platform bridges the gap between AI tutors, which offer no real accountability, and one-to-one human tutors, which remain unaffordable for most families. Tugo is built on a core belief that good-quality tutoring should be accessible for everyone.

Hugo Cheyne, co-founder of Tugo

Hugo Cheyne

Co-founder and Designated Safeguarding Lead

Hugo Cheyne built an AI tutor, watched it work, and then argued for tearing it down. His own testing showed students got faster answers and quietly stopped turning up, which is why Tugo put a qualified teacher back at the centre. He was the seventh employee at SeedLegals, the UK’s largest closer of startup funding rounds, has tutored maths since he was 15, and is a school governor, so he speaks as a technologist who is sceptical of his own field.

“I built an AI tutor that gave brilliant answers, and the kids stopped showing up. That was the moment I realised the technology was solving the wrong problem.”

Talks about

  • •The pivot: why a company that set out to build a pure AI tutor rebuilt itself around a qualified teacher, and the early tester who was convinced enough to become an investor
  • •Why faster answers make for worse learning, and what schools are getting wrong about AI
  • •Tutoring is priced like a luxury good, and the economics that keep it that way
  • •How teachers could take on more students and earn more without dropping quality

Hugo Harrabin, co-founder of Tugo

Hugo Harrabin

Co-founder and Pedagogy Lead

Hugo Harrabin taught chemistry at Harrow International before co-founding Tugo, and he makes the case that the decisive moment in a child’s education is the invisible one, the point where a misunderstanding forms and no one notices. He is PGCE-qualified, argues from the classroom rather than the pitch deck, and is the press contact for Tugo.

“A child doesn’t fail an exam on the day of the exam. They fail it weeks earlier, in a lesson where nobody saw them switch off.”

Talks about

  • •The moment a child gives up is invisible, and why exams find out too late
  • •If AI is doing the homework, where does the thinking happen, and how a teacher keeps the child doing the work
  • •Tutoring has always been a black box, so parents cannot see what they are paying for or whether it is working
  • •Good tutoring still depends on postcode and income, and the schools partnerships trying to change that
