Teach maths with Tugo

We're looking for PGCE-qualified teachers to teach small online maths classes for students aged 11 to 18, on weekday evenings.

Apply to teach

The job

Small online groups

You teach a weekly maths class of a few students, live on a video call. Our groups run from Year 7 to A-level, and every student is placed by year group and ability.

Weekday evenings

Classes start after the school day, so the hours fit around a teaching job.

We provide the scheme of work

You don't plan a course from scratch. You plan the mixed practice in each lesson around your own students, using the gaps their diagnostic assessment shows and what you see in class each week.

Lessons follow the Tugo Method

Every lesson is built around retrieval practice, spacing and interleaving. Students practise on the online whiteboard, and our AI teaching assistant supports you during the lesson.

Who we're looking for

  • A PGCE. Teaching our parent classes requires one.
  • Several full years’ experience teaching maths in a school.
  • An Enhanced DBS check that includes the children’s barred list, or willingness to get one.
  • References we can contact.

Desirable: experience marking for an exam board.

How we hire

Every tutor who teaches our classes for parents goes through each of these steps.

  1. 1

    Application

You fill in a short form, and we check every application.

  2. 2

    First interview

A conversation to get to know each other: your teaching, and how we work.

  3. 3

    Second interview and demo lesson

Deeper questions about your practice, and a short demo lesson.

  4. 4

    References

We contact your referees before you teach for us.

  5. 5

    Enhanced DBS check

Including the children’s barred list. If you need one, you can apply through our partner uCheck. The fee is yours to pay.

  6. 6

    Onboarding

About ten minutes learning to use the teaching assistant. Then you’re ready for your first class.

Our safeguarding policy sets out the rest, including the safeguarding training every tutor completes and who to contact with a concern.

Questions teachers ask

Do I need a PGCE?
Yes. Teaching our parent classes requires a PGCE.
Is the role employed or self-employed?
Self-employed. You work with us as a freelance tutor.
How much does it pay?
We talk through pay at the first interview.
Do I have to plan my own lessons?
Partly. We provide the scheme of work. You plan the mixed practice in each lesson for your own students, using their diagnostic results and what you see in class.
I don't have a current DBS check. Can I still apply?
Yes. You can get an Enhanced DBS check, including the children's barred list, through our partner uCheck. You pay the fee.
Can I teach alongside a school job?
Our classes run on weekday evenings, after the school day.
Do you hire for other subjects?
Not yet, but we'll be looking for science teachers soon. If you're a PGCE-qualified science teacher, send us your details through the same form and we'll be in touch when we start hiring.

Ready to apply?

Science teachers are welcome to send their details too. Questions first? Email hello@tugotutors.com.
