Why Our Tutoring Groups Have 6 to 8 Students

Group size is the wrong question. What decides progress is how much feedback a student gets, and feedback does not simply divide by the number of students.

It's one of the first questions parents ask, and it deserves a straight answer: how many other children will be in the room?

For Tugo GCSE Maths sessions, the answer is 6 to 8. But group size is a proxy for the thing you actually care about, which is feedback: how often your child gets told they've gone wrong, and how quickly.

Feedback Is What Moves Grades

The Education Endowment Foundation describes high-quality feedback as one of the most cost-effective ways of raising pupil attainment, with effects across all age groups and research concentrated particularly on English and maths. It isn't a soft factor. It's among the best-evidenced things a teacher can do.

You can see it isolated in the EEF's Embedding Formative Assessment trial, which trained teachers to check understanding and respond to it more systematically. Pupils gained the equivalent of two additional months of progress in their Attainment 8 GCSE score, and pupils in the lowest third for prior attainment gained more than those in the top third. Nothing changed about class size. Only the feedback changed.

This is also what the EEF found when it looked at reducing class size directly: the gains come from the flexibility to organise learners differently and from the quality and quantity of feedback pupils receive. Smaller groups help because of what they let a teacher do. The number itself was never the active ingredient.

So the question worth asking a tutoring provider isn't "how big is the group?" It's "how much feedback will my child actually get?"

Feedback Doesn't Divide by the Number of Students

Here's the assumption worth dismantling. Most people picture a tutor's attention as a fixed quantity cut into equal slices: one student gets all of it, seven students get a seventh each.

That isn't how a session works.

A one-to-one tutor spends a large share of the session waiting. The student is working through a problem, and the tutor cannot give feedback until there's something to respond to. That waiting time is real, and it's dead time. It's why adding a second or third student often costs nothing at all in feedback per student. The tutor simply works harder and uses the gaps.

Tutors give feedback to several students at once. When four students in a group make the same error rearranging an equation, correcting it once to the group serves all four. Common misconceptions in GCSE Maths are common precisely because they recur, so a large share of the feedback a group needs is shared rather than individual.

The decline is gradual, not proportional. Feedback per student does eventually fall as a group grows. But it falls slowly through the small numbers, and only collapses when the group gets large enough that the tutor can no longer see individual work at all. That's what happens in a classroom of thirty, and it's a different situation entirely.

Where the Tugo Teaching Assistant Comes In

Everything above describes what a good tutor can do alone. The reason a Tugo group of seven can match one-to-one is that the tutor isn't the only source of feedback in the room.

Every session runs with the Tugo Teaching Assistant working alongside the tutor. It checks student work as it's produced and flags errors in real time, so a mistake gets caught the moment it's made rather than whenever the tutor next looks. It also tracks which topics each student has covered and where they keep going wrong, which means the tutor arrives at each session already knowing who needs what.

That changes the arithmetic. A student in a Tugo group isn't receiving one seventh of a tutor. They're receiving a share of the tutor's attention, directed by a system that already knows where they're struggling, plus continuous checking of their own work as they do it. The tutors also work to a fixed structure rather than improvising, built on spaced repetition, retrieval practice and interleaving. Being in the Right Group Matters More Than Its Size

Underneath the group size question there's usually a more specific worry: will this work for my child? That's the right question, and the honest answer is that a group of seven only helps if the other six are working at a similar level on similar gaps. A well-run group of eight beats a badly matched group of three every time.

So students aren't placed by year group, or by school catchment area. Every student takes an initial assessment before they start, which establishes what they can already do and where the gaps are, and they join the group that matches.

Groups aren't fixed after that either. Tugo tracks every student's progress and moves them when the fit changes, so a student who pulls ahead isn't held back and a student who needs longer on a topic isn't carried past it.

When 6 to 8 Is the Wrong Choice

We would rather say this plainly than have a family find out after paying.

A group of this size is probably not right if:

  • Your child has specific educational needs that require individual pacing. Some students need the session to move entirely at their speed, and a group cannot do that honestly.
  • The gap is narrow and specific. If a student understands everything except, say, circle theorems, a handful of one-to-one sessions will close that faster than a term of group work covering the full curriculum.
  • Your child will not speak in front of peers. We can work with quiet students, and many warm up within a few sessions. But if speaking in a group is a real barrier rather than initial shyness, one-to-one is the better starting point.
  • You're weeks from the exam and need pure exam technique. Group sessions build understanding over time. That's the wrong tool for a fortnight of targeted past-paper drilling.
